How do you do this?
We have all been there, you join the gym wanting to either lose a few kilos, get fit or just be healthier, but with all the gym junkies and big machines around, it can be intimidating and make you feel like you don’t know what to do or where to start. Depending on your fitness level and what you want to get out of your workout, I would suggest you speak to one of the gym staff as they would be able to guide you in terms of which machines to use in order to achieve your goal.
But, just like everything else in life, you reach the point where your exercise routine becomes boring and stagnant. The different classes on offer is perfect for spicing things up. When you stick to the same exercise routine, eventually your body reaches a plateau and in order to continue seeing results you need to change things up.
Don’t be afraid to try a new class, if it is your first time in the class and don’t want to be in everyone’s view, partake by standing in the back of the class. If you don’t enjoy the class or can’t keep up at least you can say that you tried and know what to do or not to do. The instructors are helpful and will assist you when you need so don’t despair. Having a friend train with you or join you for the class is also a great way of curbing the intimidation and you will also be able to motivate each other and keep each other on track.
A friend took me to my first spinning class, and after 15 minutes I thought I was going to do die as I was terribly unfit and my legs were paining, but with my friend by my side I completed the class albeit a bit slower and not as intense as the rest of the class. These days, whenever I need to destress and get a good cardio workout, I simply put my earphones on, hit play on my playlist and hit the spinning bike by myself.
Should you choose, you can participate in a few classes and if you feel more comfortable doing the same exercises on your own you can do so. There are also some great apps available to give you step by step instructions on what to do depending on your goals and fitness levels whether it is at the gym or at home. In order to work out you don’t need to join the gym, you can also workout in the comfort of your home.
Remember, you know your body and it will tell you when you need to slow down or how far you can push yourself. The fact that you have taken a step in the healthy direction is a good start. Whatever you do, don’t stop, always keep on moving forward, even if it is slower than those around you. This is your journey, not theirs.
