And in the morning, I will make us waffles!
If you have ever seen the movie Shrek, you will know that this is what Donkey says to Shrek when he is pleading his case to stay over.
I have always known waffles to be a sweet snack served as a dessert so when we discovered the Waffle House in Ramsgate recently and they had breakfast and lunch waffles I was a bit skeptical, but being a foodie I was willing to give it a try, and and so glad that I did. Their waffles are the real deal with it being crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. After taking the first bite, it was like we were back in Belgium eating Brussels’ waffles.
The trick to their savory waffles are that they are sugar free which allows them to add various delicious savory toppings. They even take it as far as adding spring onion and cheese to the waffle mixture which adds a whole new dimension to it.
I am a sucker for anything with bacon for breakfast and couldn’t resist having the waffle with bacon and syrup. The savory waffle, salty bacon and sweet syrup work so well together. The different textures of the crispy waffle and the bacon is an absolute winner.
If you prefer something sweet, I would suggest the Chocolate mouse waffle or the Chocolate Mint waffle that comes with chocolate chips baked into the waffle.
If you find yourself in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and visit the Waffle House. There might be a waiting list, but in the words of the maitre’d (and me) ‘It’s worth it’.
